Dr. Lloyd Cleaver was born and raised in Macon, Missouri. He graduated from Northeast Missouri State University in 1972 with an undergrad in Science and Chemistry/Zoology. Dr. Cleaver then went on to graduate from ATSU-KCOM in 1976 as a Doctor of Osteopathy. After graduation, Dr. Cleaver completed his residency at San Diego Navy Regional Medical Center and served with the U.S. Navy and Navy Reserves as staff dermatologist and chair of the Department of Dermatology from 1982-1985. Dr. Cleaver retired from the naval reserves as a Captain.
Dr. Cleaver and his wife, Kathy, returned to Kirksville, Missouri, in 1985 and founded Cleaver Dermatology Clinic in 1986. Dr. Cleaver has three sons who have joined him in service as Dermatologists – David, Jonathan, and Nathan. Dr. Lloyd Cleaver founded a dermatology residency training program in 1991 and served as program director until 2015. In 2015, he founded a Mohs surgery fellowship and currently serves as program director for that program until 2021. In addition to practicing medicine, Dr. Cleaver is a professor of dermatology at ATSU-KCOM and assistant vice president of Continuing Education. Albert P Ulbrich Lifetime Achievement Award recipient 2022 is currently serving as secretary/treasurer to the American Osteopathic Board of Dermatology. Dr. Cleaver is board certified by the American Osteopathic Board of Dermatology in dermatology, Mohs surgery, and pediatric dermatology. He practices general dermatology, dermatological surgery, and cosmetic dermatology. Outside of work, Dr. Cleaver immensely enjoys spending quality time with his grandchildren and takes great pleasure in aviation.
